What is Forestry Mulching?

Forestry mulching is an efficient way to reduce brush and small trees into mulch. It is accomplished by using a machine with teeth attached to a rotating drum, the teeth grind the vegetation right where it is and turn it into a mulch like consistency. The mulching machine often takes the form of an attachment mounted to a compact track loader or excavator. The mulching machine that we use is manufactured by FAE and mounted to a Takeuchi compact track loader.

General Information/FAQ

When is Forestry Mulching a good idea?

Forestry mulching is a great option if you want to reduce excessive brush and small trees on your property. It is an excellent choice for removing invasive honeysuckle commonly found in northern Kentucky. The machine that we use is big enough to do some serious work but small enough to work around larger trees that you want to leave intact. This process offers minimal ground disturbance and leaves a mulch like finish that will protect against erosion as the land recovers. When brush and trees turn into mulch they seem to vanish as there is very little debris left over when the process is finished, This is great when you don’t have a good place to put a big pile of trees or you don’t want to pay to have them hauled off. It should be noted that this process does not remove the roots from the ground. As a result, the vegetation can grow back if the area is not maintained.

What is Land Clearing?

Land clearing is a process of removing vegetation roots and all. This is ideal for building sites or areas where land will be re-graded in the near future. Land clearing offers a blank slate and more control of what grows back but makes it difficult to leave valuable trees behind. Often if they are left behind their roots will be damaged in the process of removing surrounding unwanted vegetation. Land clearing leaves a bare dirt finish vulnerable to erosion. A new covering (normally grass) should be planted promptly and normally straw is also put down while the new covering takes root. It should also be noted that with land clearing you are left with all of the trees, making it necessary to have a good place to put the pile of unwanted trees or with the expense of removing them from the property which can be quite costly.
